Kenpo-Do Okinawa

The Origin of the word Kenpo

The Japanese word "KENPO" is formed by two ideograms "KEN" that means fist and "PO" that can be translated like method. The meaning of the two ideograms together can be translated as a method of combat, which in Japan was used this term referring to all methods of combat from China.
The word Kenpo or Kempo expresses absolutely the same idea; it is simply that several schools prefer to write it by alluding to the ideograms that constitute the term separately (KEN-PO) and others choose to prefer the joint pronunciation of both ideograms (M before P = KEMPO).It is said that as early as the sixth century AD, inhabitants of Okinawa traveled to China and learned martial arts there. Thus, Kenpo refers to no particular style, but rather to any form of Chinese-origin combat established in Okinawa / Japan and its descendants. In this way the Chinese disciplines influenced and enriched those originating from Okinawa, thus contributing to the formation, over time, of the current and complex panorama of Japanese Budo. We can say that the original Kenpo was born in the island of Okinawa and had great influence of the Chinese Boxing (Chuan Fa), this system of fight of Chinese origin aroused a great interest on the okinawa people, that in turn happened to combine it with other systems of local fighting, giving rise to a new system that became known as Okinawa-Te (Hands of Okinawa), art that served as the basis for the current styles of Karate.          In its origin the term Kenpo identifies more with the ideas of self defense than with the corporal discipline (muscular and mental); it is, however, at the beginning of the 20th century that it begins to emerge with another meaning: the idea of self-defense is abandoned and Kenpo becomes an art of disciplining mind and body, seeking its origins in the principle of Zen.
Nowadays, several styles have the word Kenpo, styles that seemingly have nothing in common, only all will get their knowledge to the ideogram "KEN-PO" or the Chinese methods of combat that centuries ago were introduced in Okinawa / Japan through Chinese immigrants and monks.
